Last week in New York City, the all new Bremont boutique celebrated its official opening on
Madison Avenue. At this lively event, Nick and Giles English (the brand’s founders) kindly
introduced us to the latest offerings from the Oracle America’s Cup collection, with the help of Oracle Team USA’s ship captain Jimmy Spithill and team CEO Russell Coutts. Between all the tastefully subtle co-branding touches and well-thought-out details, we can certainly say that we’re impressed with this collection’s offerings — but that would be too easy, now wouldn’t it? So, after a few days of reflection and critical assessment, here are my personal thoughts on why the latest sailing inspired pieces are worthy of a closer look.
One of my favorite Bremont LE’s, no questions asked, is the Terra Nova, which built upon the already rock solid Supermarine framework to provide an extra dose of cool. Much like the aforementioned, the Bremont “Oracle II” shares a similar aesthetic and range of added complications, though it’s considerably cleaner in several respects. The nicely textured matte black dial does not include the words “Oracle” at all, which has always been something that I’ve appreciated about Bremont collaboration pieces. Another far less favorable route could have been easily taken (I’m talking to you, Hublot!).
Additionally, the textile strap included with the Oracle II was extremely comfortable on the wrist, and looked quite sharp — a recurring theme with all the watches in the collection. The watch which I will discuss next was mounted on one of the brand’s “Tempe Island” rubber straps in a navy blue tone, which fit the nautical vibe of the watch perfectly, and had a great durable feel to it. Good stuff all around.
Next up, is my watch of choice from the new series, the slick “AC I”. This watch is straight up gorgeous. There’s really no better way of putting it. As some may know, I’m crazy about blued steel hands and indices, especially when featured alongside a stark white dial. Bremont added both of these things to the AC I, and then took it a step further by embossing the dial with miniature representations of the Auld Mug. Such an additional touch adds just enough substance to not get bored of the piece, while still maintaining a timeless appearance. The English brand also rolled out the “AC II”, a chronograph in rose gold along the same lines. It’s just a very nicely designed, classic looking piece, that could prove to be quite versatile.
All in all, I was delighted to have had the chance to handle the latest releases in the metal, and most definitely think that if you’re a fan of the brand, you should probably do the same. They’ve managed to continue to develop great looking watches that are all built like tanks, which is something we can surely get behind here at Wound For Life. They’re all quite nice, though I’m not sure I want my wrist branded with “Oracle” when I take my watch off. Given the way many in the Bay Area feel about Larry Ellison, it seems guaranteed to generate the kind of conversation one doesn’t want to have.
