First Impression: Sinn EZM 7 S Limited Edition

Sinn EZM 7 S

It’s no secret that we love Sinn watches. It’s hard to top them when it comes to a great looking, over-engineered watch at an amazing value. Sinn had quite a few new releases at Baselworld 2015 and it was hard to pick just one. I was able to rise to this incredible challenge, however, and my favorite from the Frankfurt watchmaker is the new EZM 7 S.

This watch represents unending pursuit of functional art. The development for this watch started when the Chief Fire Inspector Tomás Stanke approached Sinn for some help. The firemen needed a watch that could handle the extreme environment in which firefighters operate. The fire chief also needed something that could aid him in running a successful mission when his men and women are inside a blazing structure and he needs to manage the chaos from his position at the helm.

Sinn EZM 7 S

Sinn EZM 7 S with its interesting and quite specific scale.

The primary purpose of the bezel is to function as a mission timer for fire and rescue operations. You can clearly see the color-coded scale for rapid legibility, even through a rescue worker’s helmet visor. Like a diving bezel, it’s uni-directional, only shortening their potential time in the fire if it happens to rotate.

The EXM 7 S has a laundry list of Sinn technology like the durable PVD-coated Tegimented steel, secure unidirectional captive bezel, air-dehumidifying, extreme temperature resistance, shock resistance, anti-magnetic to 1,000 gauss, and water resistance to 200m. The movement is the reliable and robust 21 jewel ETA 2893-2 with date and well executed GMT complication. The EZM 7 S can quite literally handle anything you can throw at it. It is the right size for a tool watch of this nature. It is 43mm wide, but with its modest 12mm thickness and the PVD black case, it wears extremely well on any wrist. It’s available on a leather strap, bracelet, or rubber strap. I prefer it on Sinn’s silicon rubber strap, as it’s one of the most comfortable OEM rubber straps I’ve worn.

Also of note is the fact that in addition to being initiated by the fire brigade for real world needs, the firefighters are the ones who purchase this watch. Oftentimes, watch manufactures exclusively design and create these types of watches, and then merely give them to the respective units, whether it’s a military unit, diving corporation, or firefighting unit. While that’s still admirable, the unit members are the ones in the action and know what works best for them, often using different watches than what was gifted to them. With the EZM 7 S, the firefighters are willing to purchase them with their own hard-earned cash. What’s more, they then relay stories back to Sinn of how well the watched performed under fire (that’s a pun). The Sinn EZM 7 S is a real example of a watch that does everything it was designed to do, truly earning its tough-as nails-reputation. It’s limited to 300 units, so if you’re interested, you better be quick — or get a job in a German Fire Brigade.
